Not All Sunbeds Are Created Equal: A Guide to La Fontelina’s Placement Game

You already know my stance: some places require more than a reservation — they demand strategy.
Think of this as part two of my "placement politics" series, following the Hotel Côstes terrace survival guide.

Today’s spotlight might come as a surprise to some, because we’re not talking Parisian snobbery, but rather basking under the Capri sun at a beach club that's supposedly all about good vibes and warm welcomes. Supposedly. But don’t let the setting fool you — La Fontelina on Capri is no less political. This iconic beach spot below the Faraglioni rocks may serve seafood and spritz in your swimsuit, but don’t be mistaken: where you’re seated (or sunbathing) matters.

Despite the illusion of laid-back Mediterranean living, not all sunbeds are created equal. Even if you book weeks in advance, there's still a subtle (read: not subtle) hierarchy in play. Officially, the best spots go to the regulars. Unofficially... there are ways to finesse your fate. Here's how.

1. Arrive by Boat. Always.

Let’s be clear — the pedestrian path to La Fontelina is a hike, not a vibe. Do yourself a favor and make an entrance. Arriving by boat sends all the right signals: chic, composed, connected. The staff will clock it. So will everyone else.

2. Let Your Concierge Do the Talking.

If you’re staying somewhere fabulous (and you should be), let your hotel handle the reservation. They definitely consider where guests are staying when deciding where to place you.

3. Come as a Couple (Or With Your Glamorous Parents).

From personal observation: parties of two — ideally coupled, calm, and composed — tend to get prime spots. Bonus points if you're arriving with elegantly dressed parents who look like they’ve been summering here since the ‘80s.

4. Outfit = Outcome.

Yes, it’s a beach club. No, that doesn’t mean fashion is optional.Think statement swimsuits, vintage raffia totes, and a hat large enough to ghost your ex in. If you're giving "Dolce Vita meets Vogue editor on sabbatical," you're doing it right. Check out the moodboard to get inspired and yes, this one-piece by Valentino totally passes the vibe.

5. Or... Choose Peace.

If strategic seating, glam politics, and playing the Capri game aren't your thing — fair. Just next door, Da Luigi ai Faraglioni offers the same cinematic view of the rocks, but with a much more relaxed vibe. Friendly service, no silent judgment, and sunbeds minus the status anxiety. And if you want to skip the uphill hike, their shuttle boat back to Marina Piccola is a very welcome touch of convenience.
